A variety of styles: I aimed to create visuals for sports that were engaging, yet also clearly convey to the reader what the story is about. For many illustrations or designs, I like to start with a solid headline and execute a concept based on those words.
U.S. Open at Chambers Bay: I created the logo and overall design style for our coverage of this event which included this 32-page special section. I worked with colleagues to develop compelling visuals and solid explanatory graphics both for print and online.
Note: This section won first place in page design from SPJ Northwest
Branding and other collateral: Worked with Cash Brewing Company owners Tom and Esther to develop a logo for the company and the visual style for their beer posters and other collateral (an old-time sports feel). They currently have a dozen flavorful year-round beers on tap as well as a delightful seasonal varieties, so you should definitely stop by for a cold one if you are ever near Old Town Silverdale.
Coverage of big issues: Gathering and interpreting data on subjects such as illegal immigration and drug policy takes time and attention to detail. Other stories, from transit funding to environmental issues, were ripe topics for visualization with graphics.
Some fun before the big game: Working with colleagues, I aimed to create engaging graphics for both fans and casual observers alike. These features — a paperdoll Blitz, bingo cards, paper football game and a build-your-own bus — were included in special sections to get readers to pick up a paper before a big Seahawks game.
A variety of techniques: I aimed to create visuals for features stories that were engaging, yet also clearly convey to the reader what the story is about. For many illustrations or designs, I like to start with a solid headline and execute a concept based on those words.
Climate change on Mount Rainier: I worked with colleagues on the overall presentation of this special coverage and how best to simplify and convey the sometimes hard-to-digest jargon used by climate scientists when covering every angle of this complicated issue.
From scratchboard to watercolor, I aim to capture the essence of my subject. When it comes to illustrating, portrait work is my passion.

Honoring Ken Griffey Jr.: Visualizing the statistics related to the storied career of one of the MLB’s best was a fun and challenging project. With the assistance of the sports team, I worked to show Junior’s time in the league in a concise and easy-to-read way.
