The McClatchy Company (2017-Aug. 2018) Page designer and graphic artist. Communicated with colleagues in Bellingham, Boise and various other newsrooms throughout the company by email, phone, Google chat and Slack to plan and produce a variety of collateral including features sections, special coverage products and multi-page glossy magazines.
The News Tribune (2010-2017) Staff artist and page designer. In this role I tackled multiple responsibilities in a tight-deadline environment, ranging from producing graphics (for both print and digital), illustrating stories and designing features pages and special sections for two daily newspapers (The News Tribune and The Olympian). I gathered and analyzed data provided by government agencies, special interest/community groups and other entities to create engaging visuals about topics ranging from green space in Tacoma to property tax rates in Pierce County.
2015: Page design portfolio won first place from the Society of Professional Journalists NW Region (very large daily category).
2014: Visuals/Graphics portfolio won first place from SPJ NW Region.
2014: Page design portfolio won second place from SPJ NW Region.
Newsday on Long Island (2008-2010) Page designer and graphic artist. Designed all aspects of the paper (news, features and sports) and was the lead designer for special sections. Worked with editors and others on a redesign and branding for the tabloid’s new look.
The Seattle Times (2008) Page designer and graphic artist. Worked in the graphics department on maps, charts and such, as well as on the design desk in the business and sports departments. Illustration for sports won a Society for News Design award.
Redeye in Chicago (2007) Page designer and illustrator. As part of the staff of the free tabloid put out by the Chicago Tribune, I worked on cover illustrations (both vector and photo illustrations), page design for the paper as well as headline writing and copy editing.
The Kitsap Sun (2003-2007) Page designer and graphic artist. Designed all aspects of the paper and was responsible for all graphics and illustrations as well. Won a few Society for News Design awards and in 2006, I earned two Scripps quarterly awards for design.
